So I know I’m about a million years late (as every day in the blog world is like a month), even though I read a sweet article about Karen O earlier this summer, but I’ve finally listened to Yeah Yeah YeahsIt’s Blitz!. It’s a lot more synth-poppy than their prior albums, but personally I’m in love with the soft side of Karen O (i.e. “Maps”). I love the tracks that slow it down and seem a lot more, real. These songs make me want to sing songs, which, in my opinion, is always the best sign.
I have a lot of feelings about this, so perhaps it’s best if I just get it out and move on. I positively hate twitter. Every time I see a link that says “follow us/me on twitter” it makes me cringe. The idea that this is the wave of the future, this is all we have the attention span for anymore? 140 characters of self-promoting bullshit about other people’s boring lives. I know I’m not the most qualified to be ranting about this, as I am writing this on a blog, with the idea that other people will read or want to read it, but I’d like to think that there is a difference between blogging and twittering (can’t even believe that’s an accepted word now), especially in my case because (other than right now) I’m never blogging about myself per say. I feel as if one day my children will be telling their’s “Kids, back when I was your age, Grandma refused to embrace twitter. She would complain that she never had any idea what was going on in my life, but she never read my tweets! She was all ‘Why can’t you just write on my facebook wall like the olden days?’” So at the risk of sounding like an old person who has refused to embrace the internet, I’m putting it out there. And as a reward for reading this, here is a bangin’ tune.
This was another song recommendation from a friend. The Millioners are from Finland (what is it about Scandinavia and electronica that work so well?) and are dedicated to dancing. Everything other than this track was a little bit on the cheesy side for me, but with an album titled Most Sexiest Music (which I think is awesome and ridiculous at the same time), I think it’s pretty much to be expected. This song has grown on me slowly, so give it a chance. Perfect for a gloomy Friday such as this one.
Obviously new music is not always the best music. I decided to take a trip back to 1996 recently, with my own personal reinvestigation of Outkast’s ATLiens. Sometimes I forget how much I enjoy Andre3000’s flow, and this album is an excellent reminder. Hopefully this brings back pleasant memories for you, or fosters new ones.
Everything I’ve been hearing from Washed Out’s upcoming 12″ has been perfect. I’m really into his unfinished aesthetic. It looks like he’s been getting a lot of buzz from some big sites, so we’ll see if the internet can make him some $$$.
In case you were wondering, yes, this band is just as cute as their name. A little bird introduced me to this trio, hailing from Olympia, WA, and boy am I pleased. Where to begin? Polka Dot Dot Dot features blissful harmonies, and pure simple songwriting (two out of three of these songs count handclaps, stomps and snaps as their only instruments in addition to bangin’ vocal stylings). There is something so comforting and familiar about their music, perhaps it is the old-timey feeling that permeates throughout. With each listen I am left smiling and humming to myself, and what more is left to want?
So I couldn’t find much information about Chico Love, but this Phoenix remix is rocking my world. Rarely am I tolerant of overly long remixes, or perhaps I just lack the attention span, but for me this one is different. It is so perfectly chilled out, that it actually feels as if every section is perfectly valid. The original has become transformed and it is rare to hear Phoenix sound so low key, but it’s a welcome variation from an already awesome song.
Some wondrous person played me some of Mayer Hawthorne’s music earlier this summer, but it wasn’t until recently that I could put a name to the sound. Meet the man of my dreams. In his 20s (for a little while anyway), and bringing back soul in a way so real it’s as if it was never gone. The late sixties/ early seventies are my dream decade, the clothes, the music the cars, ahh. I always wish that more people were still making music like this, and heart-shaped red vinyl? Positively phenomenal. Full-length comes out Sept. 9, and I am waiting with breath that is baited.
I feel as if I’ve been going on endlessly about Weird Tapes, but clearly I don’t mind enough to not write this. I am in love with this track “Party Trash”, and what’s not to love after all? Perhaps it’s because it’s the end of the weekend, and what better way is there to get over your hangover than to get right back to dancing?
Today was a wonderful day. It was one of those days when I randomly came across some songs, and instantly fell in love with them. The heavy, heady love of the day for me is Organ Morgan. Very very very Avalanches-esque in terms of eclectic samples and that overwhelming old-fashioned feel. But really, any song that starts with “do you want to have a party? yeah, yeah!” is bound to lure me in. Listening to Organ Morgan is like meeting someone you feel you’ve known your whole life. Love at first listen. It makes me dream of the luxurious beach dance parties, I could and should be having, and if the guests happen to be mistaken about whether it’s the 60s, all the better.
Dipped in Dollars (D.I.D.) is the brainchild of Chief and Danger Dome. While attending a crazy liberal arts college in Vermont, we realized our mutual love of righteous dance music, art, and the people behind them. D.I.D. exists to share this love with you and hopefully turn you on to something new. More about the brains behind the brawn, here.
This site exists to promote artists, if you hear something you like, think about throwing the artist(s) a few dollars, buy an album, go to a concert, show them you care. If any artists or official people want us to take any of our links down, just shoot us an email and we'll take care of it. Happy Listening!
