Florence and the Machine

Last night, I stumbled upon Florence and the Machine, what a happy accident. She’s got this intensely soulful voice, and she’s not afraid to take it to the limit. She’s one of those musicians that is so passionate about her work, that at times I am a little bit frightened. The bio on her website is spectacular;

“Florence writes her best songs when she’s drunk or has a hangover, because that’s when the freedom, the feral music comes, creating itself wildly from the fragments gathered in her notebooks and in her head. [...] Florence herself is a mass of contradictions: she’s tough yet she’s terrified, a bundle of nerves and passion, of darkness and pure joy. “I feel things quite intensely, which is why the music has to be so intense. I’m either really sad or really happy, I’m tired or completely manic. That’s when I’m at my most creative, but it’s also dangerous for me. I feel I could write some good songs, or break some hearts. Or tables. Or glasses.”

I really couldn’t have said it any better than that. I instantly fell in love with “Dog Days Are Over”, and then I discovered her lovely cover of “You’ve Got The Love”. Prepare to feel something.

No matter how hard I try, I just can’t get into Girl Talk. There is something to be said about combining and crossing genres in incredibly swift increments of time, but listening to Night Ripper makes me feel like I’m being tested for ADD. I believe that someone like Girl Talk needs to exist in order to expand the parameters of Djing, but I’ll listen to The Glitch Mob if I want to hear someone to cross genres. This team from Los Angeles melts dubstep with various other bass heavy genres to create an entirely unique sound. They’re so good that I can forget they use Ableton for live sets. Throw these on the next time someone asks you to rip into the night.

I don’t know how apparent my love for The Strokes has been over the last eight years, but my week has been bombarded with emails about new music from Julian Casablancas. Before he hops in the studio to finish the rest of the new Strokes album, Phrazes for the Young will be out on November 3. This guy can release almost anything and I’ll bite. I’m sure you’ll also be bombarded with emails if the rest of his album sounds anything like this single.

° Bonus Phoenix Remixes °

So by now it’s pretty obvious that over here at D.I.D., we love ourselves a good Phoenix remix, and are highly anticipating the rest of the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix remix album. Here are two entirely different remixes of “Love Like A Sunset”, one by Passion Pit drummer “Shuttle” and the second by Animal Collective. Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for a Phoenix song to get any better, you realize you thought wrong.

WHO WE ARE

Dipped in Dollars (D.I.D.) is the brainchild of Chief and Danger. While attending a crazy liberal arts college in Vermont, we realized our mutual love of righteous dance music, art, and the people behind them. D.I.D. exists to share this love with you and hopefully turn you on to something new.

This site exists to promote artists, if you hear something you like, think about throwing the artist(s) a few dollars, buy an album, go to a concert, show them you care. If any artists or official people want us to take any of our links down, just shoot us an email and we'll take care of it.

If you wish to contact the team, send mail to did@dippedindollars.com or for individual addresses, check here. (But please not both, duplicates are a drag)
