Leisure Colony is an indie rock outfit out of MA. I saw them open for Gary Wilson last Fall, and was really impressed with their set. They’ve got some interesting guitar lines going down in In My Yard. You can download the entire Protectorate EP for free at their bandcamp (limited time only), and check them with Twigz/Summer Mummy in VT tonight.

I’m not quite sure how I first came across the music of Abner Jay, but it was sometime in the winter of last year. There’s not that much information available about him, but his music speaks for itself. Heart-wrenching blues sung with an authenticity that is timeless. I almost forgot the most impressive note of all, he was a one-man band (and a lot of his songs begin with some downright funny jokes). If you dig on the internet it’s possible to find some sweet vinyl rips, if you like what you hear. For now enjoy “I’m So Depressed”, the song that hooked me, and hasn’t let go since.

Crimson recently sent over these gems from French producer Mr. Flash, and I’m surprised he hasn’t taken off in the states. He started making beats way back in ‘99 (under the name Flash Gordon) and eventually found himself as the first artist to sign with Ed Banger in 2003. Since then, he’s dropped two albums on the label and produced tracks for D.I.D. favorites Mos Def and TTC. I’m hoping 2k10 can be the year for Mr. Flash. Look out for Blood Sweat & Tears when it drops this April.

Some credible sources have been hinting about a sample-cleared sophomore release from The Avalanches due out this Fall, and I’m actually starting to believe that my nine years of waiting will be coming to an end. Many more people need to be excited about this, so I’m throwing out some of their harder to find jams that go deeper than the stuff you’ll hear on Gimix/Since I Left You. These guys are my favorite artists of all time, and I’m growing tired of this album never happening. I promise to release some kind of Avalanche-esque mix this October, regardless if the album is actually released.

Broken Social Scene has done an excellent job of scooping up my favorite Canadian musicians over the last few years, and the snippets I’ve been hearing from Forgiveness Rock Record have been epic. This song reminds me a lot of the stuff from You Forgot It In People, but in a more developed state. Elizabeth Powell can sing on almost anything and I’ll bite.

Through Devon Sproule’s mailing list I learned of this lovely video for her song “Ain’t That The Way”. Devon has been a long time love of mine. I first came across her music during a live performance in a tiny living room in Vermont, and (as anyone who has seen her in person can attest) immediately became hypnotized. She is one of those magical creatures that everyone wishes they could be or be with, it also doesn’t hurt that she has a gorgeous voice. Her songs are reminiscent of running through fields in the summertime, which this video captures perfectly. She’ll be at SXSW for the first time this year and I can’t wait to fall in love all over again.

Zomby is a mysterious hyperdub producer from the UK who was recently honored with two spots on Hyperdub’s 5 Years of Hyperdub LP. He grew up listening to garage, jungle, and rave, and reflects those influences with a very intriguing sound. He has yet to show his true identity, and has done some pretty interesting interviews for the guys over at xlr8r that only adds to his mystery. Watch out of for his collaborations with D.I.D. favorite Actress on the Werk Records website.

So another track that I’m late on is the newest single from Caribou. I included it on my Valentine’s mix, but haven’t given it its proper dues. This is one of those songs that upon first listen is good, but with each subsequent experience seems to get better and better and worms its way into your subconscious until you’re listening to it uncontrollably for weeks. I can’t wait to hear more of this new Caribou. As an added bonus, also enjoy the awesome track “Irene” off of Andorra which is so subtle it might just slip by without you noticing, so be sure to pay attention.

So I know I’m late on the most recently leaked Lupe Fiasco track. It’s so simple and laid back that except for that undeniable voice, I almost didn’t recognize it as Lupe. It’s allegedly unfinished, but I’m down with the raw nature of this track, and it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve heard off of Lasers thus far.

This is going to be a great Spring from Brainfeeder. Flying LotusCosmogramma drops this May and DaedelusRighteous Fists of Harmony will be out on March 23. The album is a soundtrack to the Boxer Rebellion (Fight Club, anyone?), and I couldn’t be happier. The man behind one of the best songs of all time needs to be known around the world. Catch Daedelus on tour with D.I.D. favorites Nosaj Thing and Jogger all February.

WHO WE ARE

Dipped in Dollars (D.I.D.) is the brainchild of Chief and Danger. While attending a crazy liberal arts college in Vermont, we realized our mutual love of righteous dance music, art, and the people behind them. D.I.D. exists to share this love with you and hopefully turn you on to something new. More about the brains behind the brawn, here.

This site exists to promote artists, if you hear something you like, think about throwing the artist(s) a few dollars, buy an album, go to a concert, show them you care. If any artists or official people want us to take any of our links down, just shoot us an email and we'll take care of it. Happy Listening!
