Pictures Music is at it again, first Koreless and now Lapalux. His forthcoming EP, titled Many Faces Out Of Focus, is a mixed bag in the best of ways. While listening to the six tracks in order, at times it becomes hard to believe you’re listening to the same artist. It’s at times glitchy, and visits moments of pure pop only to return back to the world of crackles and bass. The fact that this collection of tracks is so difficult to put into a box is what I love the most about it. It will also be impossible to form an opinion about Lapalux from this one track alone, so be sure to check out the whole when it drops April 18.
It’s crazy to think about those guys who put reverb-heavy vocals over lo-fi samples and were ripped apart because of shitty performances at SXSW and the dozens of half-assed acts who followed them. My second post on this site was about one of those artists, and I guess it’s all over now. Oh well, Botany is bringing me back to those easier days of ’09 and the endless summer that permeated our collective conscience. Someone’s kid is going to take that style and make one hell of an album.
So I went down to Texas for SXSW again this year, and a lot of stuff happened. It was like one hot blur from which it’s hard to recall specific instances out of the general mayhem of it all. It’s difficult to register much when you’re being constantly shuffled between 30 minute sets, and I repeatedly found myself referring to the experience as a marathon. Luckily I took a few notes on some particularly special shows. Here we go.
My first show of the festival was Darwin Deez, which was for lack of a better word: adorable (hell, just look at that picture up there). We walked in as they were soundchecking still, but as soon as the band was done, they left the stage and made a proper re-entrance, Darwin now sporting some killer shades. Admittedly I hadn’t listened to much of their music (save that one remix, below) so I didn’t know quite what to expect. Chock full of quirky pop tunes as well as dances, it was pretty hard not to smile. In between songs, the boys dropped their instruments and performed a series of choreographed dances that proved that these guys truly know how to have a good time. Lighthearted and fun, this show was the perfect start to four days of music.
What do you get when you take a female vocalist, put her over some sparkly synths, and add gratuitous breathing sounds? A pretty seductive dance track that’s what. This one (which kind of sounds like Britney Spears meets Lykke Li to me) comes from Rimer London who, in spite of his name, is Dutch. His debut album is coming soon, and I will definitely be watching for it.
The past two years I’ve made mixes to celebrate the joys of friend love (and beautiful music of course), and I’m at it again. This was meant to come to you on Valentine’s Day and “real life” pushed it back, but I think the theme is timeless. This is just a little token to thank you for being with us on this journey, and always remember, Danger Loves You. Tracklist: [...]
Dipped in Dollars (D.I.D.) is the brainchild of Chief and Danger. While attending a crazy liberal arts college in Vermont, we realized our mutual love of righteous dance music, art, and the people behind them. Along the way we were joined by Crimson and B.Darko. D.I.D. exists to share this love with you and hopefully turn you on to something new.
This site exists to promote artists, if you hear something you like, think about throwing the artist(s) a few dollars, buy an album, go to a concert, show them you care. If any artists or official people want us to take any of our links down, just shoot us an email and we'll take care of it.
If you wish to contact the team, send mail to did@dippedindollars.com or for individual addresses, check here. (But please not both, duplicates are a drag)
