Kid Smpl is the the alias of 21 year old Seattle based electronic producer Joey Butler. He was one of only nine Americans selected to attend the RBMA in New York this year, and “Pulse” is the perfect introduction to his catalog. I was given the opportunity to shoot Joey a few questions after listening to his forthcoming Escape Pod EP.
Where does Kid Smpl come from?
I wish there was an interesting story behind the name haha but that’s not the case. I just thought that “Kid Simple” sounded cool and I eventually changed the spelling of the name due to some people getting me mixed up with another producer.
I see you’re based in Seattle at the moment. What’s the scene like out there? Any local producers you try to keep up with?
Over the past year or so it’s really started to become something pretty dope. There are a lot of great producers and DJs in Seattle right now and everyone seems to have their own sound. There’s definitely a more dancey, extroverted side with producers like Astronomar, Cedaa, Tony Goods, and qp however there is also a more mellow, introspective sound going on that producers like DJAO, Domokos, and myself lean towards. We actually threw a Hush Hush Records label launch / Escape Pod EP release party last night that really showcased this side of the Seattle sound. The night was a blast and really made me feel good about the scene.
How would you describe the sounds on the EP?
Introspective, cold, and isolated.
Any shows you’re looking forward to playing this summer?
I’m looking forward to playing Standard in Seattle next month as well as any performance opportunities that arise at RBMA this year in NYC. Hopefully there will be some more Hush Hush events in the future also.
When is Escape Pod officially out?
