Our latest Substitute Teachers mix comes from Piff Gang, a group of artists from London who have brought UK cloud rap to another level. DJ Motive (@MotiveUK) curated the selection you’re hearing today, and we spoke a bit after I listened to the mix.
Who started Piff Gang? Has it always been a set group or do artists come and go?
Piff Gang started as a group of friends, most of which made music, sometimes together basically joining forces & pushing through a new idea for Hip Hop in the UK
When did producers like Sumgii, The Purist, Crankz, and Budgie come into play?
Budgie & Crankz are our in-house producers, they’ve been Piff Gang from the beginning too.
Piff Breaks & 808s was mostly produced by Crankz, Budgie‘s become much more than a producer for us, he does so much for the gang…most of what you’ve heard since the 1st tape was recorded at Budgie‘s.
Producers like The Purist and Sumgii came about after we started releasing music, they fucked with us, we heard their beats & we fuck with them…we’ve recorded hella tunes with Sumgii this year.
How would you describe the process of making Piff Breaks & 808s?
We basically got a load of beats from Crankz & a couple from elsewhere that we felt came together & worked as a project, spent a while writing it together & then had a week where we just went in & laced the whole thing.
When we look back at the processes from then to now its crazy how things have stepped up. We didn’t expect that tape to get as much love as it did.
What’s next on the release front?
Another mixtape drops in a few weeks! We’ll be leaking some stuff prior to the tape dropping too.
Do you have any other producers lined up for your next release?
S-Type‘s got a beat on the next tape, JD. Reid too, you’ll be hearing a lot from us & those two in the future…the rest is Budgie, Crankz & Sumgii.
