Dirg Gerner‘s releases as fLako continue to bridge the distance between his head and his heart, and his most recent remix for NYC jazz vanguard José James articulates a languid opulence of chord splashes, heady bass lines, and pivotal layers of vocals. Be sure to grab James‘ Come To My Door EP with additional remixes by Taylor McFerrin, Oddisee, and FaltyDL.

“Illicit Fantasy” is new territory for fLako, who transports Deft‘s hard hitting original into a somber field of organic electronics and frenetic footwork rhythms. The work was commissioned by Skullcandy for their Supreme Sound from London series, and they just launched the release on Skullcandy.com. You must check out fLako‘s Eclosure EP if you haven’t heard it yet.
fLako’s “Mating Dance” swirls in complex layers and genres, juxtaposing latin percussion with r&b harmonies, live guitar, and solemn electronic instrumentation to create a sound we’ve fallen in love with over the last few months. Dirg Gerner has built an impressively diverse catalog with his releases on Project: Mooncircle and Ho Tep Records, and Eclosure is sure to articulate an even wilder frontier. fLako‘s “Honey Drips” is among the best pieces you’ll hear this year. It’s one of those works that puts everything else he’s done into context, with indiscernible vocals (a la Cocteau Twins) and a woozy, beat-influenced r&b sound that is stoically being fleshed out on his soundcloud. I cannot wait for his forthcoming EP to drop November 5th on Five Easy Pieces.
