Astro Nautico and INNIT/Day Tripper Records have collaborated on a unique project which finds most of the label sampling Akria Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” to for 7 track. Conversely, 7 members of the Japan-based INNIT have flipped sounds found in the westernized version of the same film, John Sturges‘ “The Magnificent Seven”. The release will be available both digitally and on cassette today, and they’ll be celebrating the release with a party tonight at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn with additional support from Giraffage. Teen Daze, Giraffage, and XXYYXX have fantastically collided on “Even Though”, which Kitsuné has given us in support of their first Kitsuné America compilation. Purchase the entire compilation here.

The past two years I’ve made mixes to celebrate the joys of friend love (and beautiful music of course), and I’m at it again. This was meant to come to you on Valentine’s Day and “real life” pushed it back, but I think the theme is timeless. Giraffage just sent over a fresh tune, “With You”, which he’s described as “frolicking through fields with the one that you love on an overcast day.” The overarching swell of bird chirps and 808 cowbells echo this hue of embellishment, and gently grow diluted in a swallow of bleary synths and high pitched samples. He always places snare hits at just the right moments.

Here we are, the very last mix of the year. December has been a great month for tunes, we’ve blogged about tons of new releases, but we know it’s hard to keep track of everything, so here are our favorites from this past month in a neat little bundle. Senzu is an LA based collective who showcase forward thinking electronic producers through a free monthly mixtape. Their first two tapes were heavy on artists from the LA beat scene, but it now has expanded to include more producers from across the country and abroad. Senzu Volume III features top work from Juj, Knxwledge, Giraffage, and D33J, and I’m particularly fond of this new beat by Soosh. You can download the entire mixtape for free on their bandcamp.

Giraffage is Charlie Yin, a 21 year old multi-instrumentalist from San Francisco who produces lush electronic music. Comfort, his stunning debut LP, was released a little over three weeks ago, and has been widely acclaimed the world over. I asked him to throw together anything he’d like for this Substitute Teachers, and he presented us with a sublimely chromatic collection of his contemporaries.

A chunk of electronic producers took their first steps on the scene with that dreamy, chill-ridden sound that everyone (including us) obsessed over two years ago, and Giraffage‘s Comfort LP forces the endless summer into a clearer and coherent beat prism that hits from start to finish. Charlie Yin is up to some top work on tracks like ORGSM, Holy Mountain, and Visible. You can pick your price for this stunner on his bandcamp.

Giraffage‘s “Moments” is as fresh as they come, with a solid accoutrement of crisp electronics and off-kilter samples bounced against a house backbeat. I remember hearing him produce more chillwave-y tunes about a year ago, and it’s interesting to hear him work within a cleaner, hi-fi sound. Comfort, his debut LP, should be out very soon.
