We’re very excited and honored to be presenting this mixtape (alongside Mostly Junk Food and Potholes in My Blog) by one of our favorite musicians, the wonder that is Datahowler. He’s crafted this one in honor of the heatwave/drought that Texas experienced this summer from which they are just now recovering. In his own original work he draws from a myriad of influences, so it’s only fitting that this would be an eclectic bundle of joy. More than just a mix, it’s an explorative journey of sound. This has been a good year for Dipped in Dollars. From getting a mention in the Guardian, previewing Jai Paul‘s album in XL’s New York office, interviewing artists like Gilles Peterson, Jensen Sportag and Onra to premiering exclusive mixes by Solar Bears, Teams, and Streets Of Beige, our second year has been filled with lots of fun. Hopefully we’ve been able to influence a few record purchases as well. One of our favorite Warp first-stringers snuck out a bite-size, 4 track addendum of sorts to his release of Mind Bokeh earlier this year. Titled K Is For Kelson, this is a tasteful addition to Bibio‘s collection and the quality of this (seemingly) spontaneous release really makes you wonder what sort of sonic arsenal he has stored behind closed doors. In many ways these tracks stand stronger than some of the Mind Bokeh material. The alternate version of K Is For Kelson showcases a clever B section, and Like A Sundial demonstrates Bibio‘s progress in incorporating his vocals into more of his music. In a time of genre-tripping, sample-chopping, medium-blending and software-splicing, Steven Wilkinson (Bibio) is one who reminds us that electronic tools, when applied to music production, are simply that: tools. Far too often musicians confuse the mechanisms of production with the production itself by utilizing a tool just because it is available. This is where much electronic music fails to leave a lasting impact on listeners. Bibio, on the other hand, has proven himself a master craftsman of memorable songs by focusing on the musical quality of each sonic layer in his work independent from the tools used to shape them. Much of his success in achieving this is due to where he started. Fi, Hand Cranked, and Vignetting the Compost (three albums consisting of lo-fidelity, acoustic guitar-centric songs recorded through analogue and tape gear) relied heavily on solid musicianship and compositional ability in order to work. Having this perspective on the musical process has undoubtedly benefited him in transitioning to a more beat heavy, digital-dependent sound. Ambivalence Avenue–his last release–showcased a successful cross-breeding of many elements in his earlier work with bold ventures into many new genres that demonstrated the depth and dynamism of his musical wherewithal. Through Mind Bokeh, Bibio’s musical evolution has only strengthened, and, more importantly, he has taken great strides in silencing the digital-analogue, electronic-organic, lo-fi/hi-fi debate by demonstrating that it is not what you use, but how you use it that truly matters.

In Bibio’s workbench, every tool is fair game, and Mind Bokeh demonstrates this well. Contrary to many of his contemporaries, Bibio uses his production tools tastefully to embellish and shape musical ideas that could otherwise stand alone, and the resulting effect is a real treat. Many moments in this album have the strange power to remind me of a time and place I’ve never even experienced. Some of the tracks smack you right in the face while others take a more subtle approach, but they all leave a lasting impression. The strongest tracks in my mind–”Pretentious,” “Anything New” and “Artists Valley”–are fully equipped with powerful demonstrations of style, technique, and musicality as they follow classic Bibio structuring by transitioning seamlessly from one theme into the next. His ability to switch between a display of technical prowess and simplistic beauty is what gives each part of his songs relative and absolute strength. “Pretentious” sneakily weaves a mal-tuned introduction into a working theme, making for a clandestine transition just before breaking into a perfectly placed key change. Similarly, the loose-feel, resonator-crumbling beat construction on “Artists’ Valley” demonstrates his ability to craft elements that are both technically impressive and sonically tasteful. His simplicity shines through as well. The line that hits midway through “Anything New” sounds like a stork carefully descending from the sky to deliver a woven basket of melancholic candied yams while the track’s concluding synth/vocoded passage could loop forever as far as I’m concerned. Similarly, the repetitive, melodic hook in “Feminine Eye” will have your toe tapping right along.

Every song exists in this album quite deliberately, and each has the ability to stand alone. “Take off Your Shirt” features an effective venture into some catchy house-rock, “Wake Up” delivers some middle-eastern flair, “Light Sleep” reminds of how much we loved Ambivalence Avenue’s “Jealous of Roses” while “K is for Kelson” offers a happy, upbeat, Lemon Jelly-esque respite. “More Excuses” functions as a fitting second movement to the opening track, and the album’s closer, “Saint Christopher” brings a straight 4/4 bass drum pulse to life through a fluttering, rhythmic mosaic of guitar. Ultimately, each song in Mind Bokeh proves itself worthy of many listens, and each song is filled to the brim with evidence of Bibio’s ability to wield the wand of 21st Century music production with the right amount of vision, flair, musicality and restraint. Oh, and did I mention he can sing?

Electronic music is here, and it’s here to stay. Still, the term “electronic music” lends itself to such a wide plurality of labels and interpretation that it makes it difficult to comprehensively dissect. It tends to be the default category to which many mutant genres and bastard aesthetics are haphazardly tossed into. With a significant chunk of today’s electronic music existing not as an musical statement but more as demonstrations of the latest music technology, sorting through it all can be very disorienting. Thankfully, an artist or album comes along every so often to dissolve the term “electronic music,” and leaves us with, well, music. Bibio is one of those artists, and Mind Bokeh is one of those albums.

March has seriously been the month of Mind Bokeh over here, and I was surprised to see K is for Kelson up on Warp‘s soundcloud this morning. This isn’t the first track from the album that I’d throw up on a soundcloud, but I think it’s light and airy enough to showcase the record’s eclecticism. I’ll honestly go with whatever Bibio/Warp think will work best. Mind Bokeh drops next Tuesday.
