After spending most of the year with Plastic Beach and seeing Gorillaz live at Madison Square Garden in October, this video for Doncamatic is a complete letdown. The single can be found on an upcoming Gorillaz release that Albarn made entirely on his ipad, and I’m hoping the rest of the album isn’t anything like this video. This recent live session from Radio 1′s Live Lounge is lifting my spirits a little. Joker also killed the remix. You can buy the single everywhere today.

Bustedbass and I were able to see Gorillaz play Madison Square Garden last Friday. From the moment the orchestra played the first notes of the orchestral intro to Plastic Beach, it was clear that this was going to be a once in a lifetime performance.

Damon Albarn effortlessly shared the stage with Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Rosie Wilson, Little Dragon, De La Soul, Mick Jones, Bashy, Kano, Miho Hatori, Bootie Brown, Paul Simonon and Lou Reed, who all (aside from Reed) appeared humbled to be part of the performance.

Albarn crafted a perfect two hour set that evening. The show started with the first few songs from Plastic Beach and seamlessly progressed through an eclectic collection of songs from each album. All of the guests were given their proper dues when they appeared, and the crowd really responded to classics like El Manana, Clint Eastwood, Dare, and Feel Good Inc.

My favorite moments were split between the live version of El Manana, hearing Little Dragon sing on Empire Ants, and Bootie Brown‘s surprise appearance on Dirty Harry.

The show concluded with Bobby Womack on Cloud Of Unkowing, Bashy and Kano flowing over Del‘s verse on Clint Eastwood, and an ethereal finale of Don’t Get Lost In Heaven/Demon Days.

It was the best concert I have ever seen. If you’re only able to spend money on one concert this year, than Escape To Plastic Beach should be it. They’ve just started carving through the first dates of their world tour, and you owe it to yourself to see this performance.

I’ve been brewing on this Plastic Beach stream for a few weeks, and can safely say that I am thoroughly impressed with this album. I was speaking with someone the other day about how the music industry has almost turned into a “best song of the day” type of scene, and if it has, then Plastic Beach will be afloat for weeks. Damon Albarn is one of the few producers that can digest a genre without sounding like he’s exploiting his influences. After thoroughly digesting D-Sides, The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, and his recent production for Amadou et Mariam, it’s easy to understand how he ended up with the pieces of Plastic Beach. There are some songs on the album that I don’t like, but the good far outweighs the bad. Empire Ants may be my favorite song on the album. I love the New Edition-ish melodies of Little Dragon, and the electro breakdown towards the end is perfect. I can’t wait to hear what Albarn will do next.

I’ve been on a little funk odyssey after seeing Breakbot last week, and this Yuksek remix of Stylo is keeping me running. This song makes me feel like I’m locked in the beginning of Suspiria. Plastic Beach drops on March 9.

Gorillaz/Damon Albarn has always held a very special place in my heart. Demon Days was one of my top albums of the decade, and everything I’ve been hearing about Plastic Beach has been getting me very excited. I went pretty crazy when Damon leaked some demos (particularly Broken) last year, and if Stylo is any indication of what we’ll be hearing on the rest of the album, then I’m ordering my copy tomorrow. I’m killing myself for not living anywhere near Indio right now.
