° LIVE: M83 & Active Child °

The Friday before Halloween, I was lucky enough to get the chance to go out (in costume as Diana Ross) to see M83 and Active Child play the Black Cat. They’ve put out two of my favorite albums of the year, so the opportunity to see them on the same stage was not to be passed up.

I’d seen Active Child once before, on his smaller tour with Com Truise, but I’ll happily take any chance to hear him play live. I had You Are All I See on repeat for at least a month, almost haunted by his hypnotic falsetto. The record is so deeply emotional, and almost remorseful, that it can be hard to let go once it’s taken ahold. His live performance is true to his recordings, and only made me fall more in love with them. He threw in some classic jams like “When Your Love Is Safe” (ridiculously dope Classixx remix can be found below) and perfectly set the stage for the wonder that is M83.

It’s hard for me to think of M83‘s epic double album, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming merely as collection of songs. It is a fully immersive sonic experience, rife with nostalgic emotions. Luckily his live performance perfectly matched the glorious pop energy of the record. The stage was awash in lights and fog as he rattled off hits like “Midnight City” and “Kim & Jessie” before settling in to a calmer groove. It was beyond incredible to witness recordings I’ve treasured come to life, and if you get the chance, this is not a show to be missed. Check out the rest of his tour dates here, and for photos head on over to All Things Go.

° LP: M83 – Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming °

As his fifth official album release, M83’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming balances old and new in a way that many fail to do after more than a decade of output. From the frenetic synth washed skylines of Before the Dawn Heals Us to the lighter, pop-infused Saturdays = Youth, Gonzales has defined a range of work with enough diversity and convention to keep fans and critics engaged without alienating them. Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming undoubtedly expands this effect as it adds both breadth and depth to Gonzales’ tenure as a musician and producer. It’s also a refreshing demonstration of a veteran’s ability to incorporate contemporary influences into his core base of influence. In doing this M83 stays fresh through self reference and reinterpretation. Tracks like “Intro (ft. Zola Jesus)” and “Reunion” showcase a different vocal display than Gonzales’ norm, while the variety of rhythmic and instrumental textural variation from track to track demonstrates that he has been keeping a pulse on the swarms of parallel genres currently flourishing around him.  It’s also great to hear the use of some flavors seldom found in previous M83 productions (flute and slap bass for example). Yet, through every moment of the album you understand that you are still completely immersed in the big cinematic soundscaping, stellar production, and epic ebb and flow of a trademark M83 release.

One of the greatest indicators of success for a musician wishing to extend the timetables of their flair is the ability to tastefully introduce new elements without flipping a working formula on its head. It is a delicate task, one that is achieved organically through years of refinement and honest approach. It is nearly impossible to achieve through robust calculation and serves more as a symptom of creative achievement than a strategy for it. If Gonzales hasn’t reached this point yet, he is getting very, very close.

° M83 – “Midnight City” °

M83 has sent over a new track from his upcoming album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”. Titled Midnight City, this glimpse at the forthcoming double album has us excited to hear more. It sounds like a true encapsulation of the various directions M83 has gone over the years, merging some of the high energy, synth-laden sounds of “Before the Dawn Heals Us” with some of the pop sensibilities of “Saturdays = Youth“. ° Tour: M83 °

It seems like ages since M83 first graced fans with the release of Saturdays = Youth. It was an album that took their work in a wonderful direction, and demonstrated a profound knack for epic orchestration and overall production ability of the band’s mastermind, Anthony Gonzalez. What’s more, M83 have brought their synth-heavy sound to live settings with great effectiveness over the last couple of years, offering fans the opportunity to see their music recreated in full force. After three years of anticipation, the wait to hear M83‘s latest musical direction is nearly over. With this new album teaser video and a full tour schedule posted, we are very excited to hear what’s coming. Gonzalez has spoken a bit about the new album, mentioning it’s 22 track length and describing it as “epic, dreamy, and powerful.” Go here to get tickets for the North American tour and stay tuned for more news on the upcoming release.
