° Twigz °

The guys from Twigz just sent me two new jams from their upcoming Dim Picnic EP, including an unreleased track from their show with Small Black at Princeton. I had the opportunity to sit in on some of their studio sessions last Fall, and it really helped me appreciate the foundations of their sonic quality. They sure are throwing their all into this album. They’ve also been editing their mixes with some great producers, so I’m pretty sure the EP is going to make a big splash. Stay tuned for their Mix of the Month later this Spring.

Fall Be Kind
Boy am I thankful for Animal Collective. I was a little weary that Merriweather Post Pavillion would be their last foray into pleasantry, but everything I’ve heard from the Fall Be Kind EP is serious. Bonus for being the first band legally to sample the Grateful Dead. Anyone who is into anything by Animal Collective has to buy this album. I’m really excited to see where their sound will go next. Throw these on before your Thanksgiving is bombarded by heaps of Dominican tennis players who judge you for not drowning all of your parties in Bachata.

Animal Collective – Graze

Animal Collective – What Would I Want Sky?

Check out Twigz if you’re a big fan of these jams.

° Real Estate/Twigz °

Real EstateI’ll never forget the first time that Alex Bleeker approached me about engineering a show for his band Real Estate.  He told me it was their third gig, and they really just wanted to sound like they were underwater.  Since then, Real Estate have found themselves on some big sites and considered pioneers of the lo-fi scene.  I was lucky enough to engineer another show for them last week, and they played one solid ass set.  It was crazy to hear how well their sound has evolved over the last year.  Every song they played was magic.  Bonus closing with their version of Mountain Man’s Animal Tracks.

One of the best parts of the show was a set by Twigz, the neo-psychedelic/experimental brainchild of Tom Greenberg.  I’ve been able to hear snippets from his No Picnic EP, and I really think it’s gonna leave some deep impressions in a lot of people.  Lots of chaos combined with something beautiful.  Hopefully they’ll be able to hit some cities when the EP is complete.

Real Estate – Pool Swimmers

Real Estate – Black Lake

Twigz – Buggy Tide
